4K at Petersen: A Joyful Foundation for Early Learning

Our 4K program is designed with young learners in mind—honoring the way children grow, explore, and make sense of the world in these early years. We focus on building a strong foundation through hands-on, meaningful experiences that support the whole child: academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

In 4K, students are gently introduced to early literacy and numeracy skills, with an emphasis on letter recognition, sound awareness, number sense, and early problem-solving. Instruction is intentionally paced and developmentally appropriate, ensuring that children are not rushed but are instead given time to truly understand and grow in confidence.
  • Fine and gross motor development is a key part of each day. Children engage in activities that strengthen hand coordination for early writing readiness, as well as large-movement play that builds balance, coordination, and body awareness.
  • In keeping with our belief that young children learn best through real-world interaction, screen use is extremely limited. On rare occasions, a short educational video may be used to support learning, but students are not assigned individual devices or tablet-based instruction. Instead, we prioritize direct engagement, conversation, creativity, and exploration.
  • Time outdoors is an essential part of the 4K experience. Students spend meaningful portions of their week outside, where they learn through nature, movement, and imaginative play. These experiences support curiosity, emotional regulation, and a sense of wonder in God’s creation.
Above all, our 4K classroom is a place where children are known, loved, and encouraged to grow at a pace that honors who they are becoming.

The 4K program meets four mornings per week, Monday through Thursday, providing a gentle rhythm that supports both learning and family life. Tuition assistance for the 4K program is available via the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program.
